DI Girls
In the 2007 BIIF playoffs, Waiakea suffered a bitter loss to Konawaena. Coach Grant Kauhi made it a goal to come back the following year and win it all. The Warriors ran the table in 2008 and went undefeated pulling off one of the most satisfying seasons in recent memories. Their big win at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium over defending champion Konawaena completed their goal. Waiakea was able to use an up tempo style of pushing the ball whenever possible. Kauhi was able to harness his talent and made sure everyone could contribute to their strengths. With a team of strong individual personalities, Kauhi was great at getting his team to mesh and play together.

Camie Imai had the largest growth spurt of any returning player. Growth in the areas of her mental game and her athletic skill soared in 2008. She was able to develop a pull up jumper in transition, which made her finishing hard to defend. She was truly the heart of the Waiakea transition game and opened up the Warrior early offense. She was truly the MVP of the 2008 BIIF tournament, tormenting Konawaena in the championship game.

Vicky Tagalicod had a great season as usual and her Junior year was no exception. Mostly double teamed the whole year or drawing a team’s best defender, Tagalicod was still able to score a bunch of points. Tagalicod is probably the best pure passer in the league able to make that nice touch bounce pass to the post or that bullet thread to a back door cut. Tagalicod makes everyone around her better and this is her real strength. Tagalicod carried Hilo to the Semifinal game before losing a heartbreaker to Konawaena.

Kirsty Imai and Kira Demorales probably had the best two man game in the league. When Imai drove, Demorales was there waiting for the dish to finish or drew her defender away from Imai who layed it up. Imai was one of the leagues best three point shooters which made her a double threat. Jackie Kaio-Goo kept Keaau physical, her rebounding and post up game kept the Cougars close to the BIIF's best DI teams. The much improved scoring Goo gave Keaau another scoring option inside with post buddy Kayla Spagnolo.

Mana Hopkins
finished her Konawaena career with four HHSAA tournament appearances. Hopkins has two HHSAA championships under her belt ending one of the best player runs in the BIIF. Her tough inside and mid range game made the Wildcats tough to contend for the last four years. She carried a young Konawaena team through the season and stopped all speculation that the Wildcats were in a rebuilding year. Her leadership of the young interior players made Konawaena not only a BIIF contender but also an HHSAA contender.

Cara Hanato-Smith
was the leagues best outside threat. Hanato-Smith was the most consistent threat in three range for the BIIF. She literally stole the game from the Kamehameha Warriors hitting five treys in the fourth quarter. Being an offensive threat helped Hopkins with more of a balance offense and kept defenses honest. If it was not Hopkins scoring inside it was Hanato-Smith draining treys from the outside. In addition to her scoring Hanato-Smith was the defensive glue in the Wildcat full court press and half court man.

DII
In 2007 the Warriors were upset in the BIIF playoffs by HPA, it was the only blemish in what was considered a stellar year. In 2008 it was no mistake that the Warriors were the best BIIF team and demolished every DII team in their path. However in the HHSAA they had an unfortunate draw and lost to eventual champion Campbell. Second year coach Kalani Silva
has taken the Warriors to the BIIF championship and for that he is our BIIF DII Coach of the year.

Our player of the year, Junior Kanisha Bello had another great season leading the Warrior offensive attack. Her athleticism was very great to see as she was one of the scoring leaders of the league. Bello is joined on the first team by team mates Tabitha Eseroma and Ashley Kalauli. Eseroma had another great year pounding the boards and drop stepped her opponents. Kaulauli led the Warriors with assists and handled the break and ball handling chores of the BIIF champions. Sophomore Tayler Wang led the Kamakani to a DII runner up finish. Her double digit scoring every game provided the much needed offensive punch.

Wang has a bright future for the Kamakani. Sara Lo from Kohala is a quality athlete that helped Kohala finish in third in the BIIF DII. She scored 19 points to help Kohala defeat Pahoa 63-39. Chelsea Himalaya was one of the quickest floor leaders for the DII division. Playing both soccer and basketball during the same seasons this two sport athlete made sports history by becoming all - BIIF in two BIIF sports running simultaneously in the same season. Sacrificing scoring, her ability to play disciplined in a structured system enabled her to make Tayler Wang a better scorer.

Iolani Powers Past Waiakea to the HHSAA Final
By HawaiiSportsPage.com
February 21, 2008: Iolani showed why the ILH may be the best conference in Hawaii for division I girls basketball. They beat BIIF undefeated Waiakea handily 67-45. Waiakea was able to hold down Iolani to only seven points in the first quarter leading 10-7. However Iolani caught fire from three point range. Iolani Jumped on Waiakea to take a slim seven point lead into the half. However Iolani ran away in the third quarter taking a large 51-33 lead. Jaime Smith scored 20 points while Kira DeMorales played an all around offensive and defensive game. Iolani ended the BIIF's one year reign of the Division I HHSAA Championship. Waiakea will play Radford for third place tomorrow at 4 pm at the Stan Sherrif Center on the UH Campus. Konawaena lost to Lahainaluna 52-37 in consolation play as Mana Hopkins ended her great prep career with 18 points to lead the Wildcats. Maika Viela of the Lunas scored 18. Meanwhile Kamehameha-Hawaii bounced back to defeat Maryknoll at Aiea High School 52-47. Kamehameha will play for fifth place tomorrow against HPA which defeated St Francis 39-38 in Waialae at Kalani High School Gym. In division I, Punahou will play Iolani in the battle of ILH powers for the HHSAA 2008 Girls Title. Both have faced each other twice in regular season and once in the ILH tournament. The Iolani, Punahou game will assure that the ILH will win the HHSAA girls DI title four of the last six years. In DII McKinley high school will face Campbell which defeated Kailua 39-25, while McKinley defeated a good Molokai team 52-39.

However Molokai jumped to an 11-3 lead and that proved to be the difference in this defensive game. 2008 BIIF Tournament
Waiakea subdues Konawaena for DI Title
By HawaiiSportsPage

February 9, 2008:
Waiakea put on a offensive clinic in the second half to capture the BIIF DI title at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium. The Warrior offensive transition game kept Konawaena on their heels all night. Waiakea defeated Konawaena 65-48 in front of a loud crowd. After a high scoring first half both teams were deadlocked at 29. However Waiakea turned up their defense and pushed the ball in transition which put a lot pressure on the Konawaena defense. Waiakea increased their lead to 12 at the end of three quarters. Waiakea then spread the floor using a four corner offense and took advantage of their mismatches in speed and athleticism which led to easy baskets. The Warrior lead grew to as much as 25 points in the fourth quarter before Grant Kauhi subbed most of his starters with more than two minutes left in the game. Last year in the BIIF DI tournament Konawaena used a firepowered second half to run away from Waiakea. However, this year the tables were turned around with Waiakea returning the favor. Kirsty Imai led Waiakea with 20 points while sister Kamie Imai had 15 points and Kira Demorales finished with 14. Senior Warrior Raenelle Santos controlled the floor and finished with six points. Thea Hanato-Smith finished with nine points to lead the Wildcats, while Kim Brown contributed eight points. Waiakea defender Camie Yamashita kept Mana Hopkins in check as Hopkins was held to only six points. Hopkins scored 25 points against Hilo in the BIIF semifinal the night before. Both teams will now travel to Oahu and represent the BIIF in the HHSAA DI championship. Members of the Waiakea team are: Stacy Sanekane, Cassie Morigaki, Jamielynn Moe, Tracie Sanekane, Shantei Paranada, Kirsty Imai, Alyssa Miyake, Kamie Imai, Raenelle Santos, Camie Imai and Kira Demorales. The Coaches are Grant Kauhi, Brandon Kauhi, Ikaika Harris, and Jason Kauhi. Konawaena is coached by Bobbie Awa.

Kamehameha defeats HPA for DII BIIF Title
By HawaiiSportsPage.com
February 9, 2008: Kamehameha-Hawaii dominated HPA 50-26 to capture the BIIF DII tournament. Last year the Warriors looked past HPA and were surprised by the Kamakani in the BIIF tournament. This year's Kamehameha team was not looking past the Kamakani as they took control and never relinquished it back. Kanisha Bello turned in 16 points while Tabitha Eseroma added 11 points for the Warriors. Kamehameha led by only eight at the half before outscoring their opponents 27-11 in the second half. Tayler Wang led HPA with 13 points. Both teams will now travel to Oahu for the 2008 HHSAA DII Tournament. Members of the Kamehameha-Hawaii team include; Ashlee Kalauli, Kanisha Bello, Joelle Cabasa, Kayla Lacaran-Costales, Shanley Apele, Wikolia Enos, Bryanna DeLima, Uilani Poepoe, Kaopua Sutton, Katherine Yang, Kaci Rosehill, and Tabitha Eseroma. Konawaena Earns State Berth Over Hilo
By HawaiiSportsPage.Com
February 8, 2008: In front of an enthusiastic crowd the Wildcats defeated the Vikings 55-49 in semifinal action at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium. The BIIF second seed Vikings ended their successful season at 10-2. Mana Hopkins led Konawaena with 25 points. The game was tied at 22 at the half. At the beginning of the third quarter, Vikings Vicky Tagalicod got Hilo going with two straight baskets gaining momentum and going ahead 26-22. On an ensuing transition Tagalicod was attempting a breakaway layup and was challenged by Wildcat defender Malia Tanaka. Tagalicod made the basket but was fouled and injured on the play. Tagalicod did not return for the rest of the game but was seen on the bench being able to stand.

Hilo maintained the momuntem from Tagalicod mainly with the rebounding and timely inside shots by Senior Denise Tokeshi. Other important shots from the Viking Offense in that important third quarter came from Seniors Aisha Sueda, Kellie Yagi and Christine Laeda. Hilo led by five after three quarters 41-36. Hilo would maintain the lead until 2:31 into the game in which Kona went on a 8-1 run. Konawaena's tough man defense wore down the Vikings spread offense, which was missing floor leaders Tagalicod and Kayla Nobriga (sprained ankle 3rd quarter). Hilo seemed to be running a spread delay game in which Kona was able to get some key steals and forced some timely turnovers midway through the fourth quarter.

Hilo scored only eight points in the fourth quarter while Konawaena was able to score 19 points. Hilo was forced to foul after trailing in the closing minute which created the six point margin of victory. Mana Hopkins offense kept Kona in the game with most of her 25 points coming in the third quarter. Wildcat Kara Hanato Smith finished with 14 points. For Hilo, Tagalicod led Hilo with 16 points while Aisha Sueda scored 13.

Waiakea was unable to pull away like previous games against the Cougars. The Warriors were able to stretch their lead to double digits early in the fourth quarter but was unable to put the Cougars away until the ending of the quarter. Kirsty Imai led Waiakea with 23 points while sister Kamie Imai added 21. Rayleen Naki led Keaau with 18 points and Jackie Kaio-Goo had 12 points.

Konawaena Captures State DI Title
By HawaiiSportsPage.com
May 2007: Konawaena defeated Punahou 59-47 at the Stan Sheriff Center for the 2007 HHSAA State Girls DI Championship. Konawaena opened up to a double digit lead and played hold on to capture the big trophy. Punahou coach Mike Taylor used a swarming defense and tried to wear down Kona with multiple substitutions and aggressive trapping man. It created some turnovers but Kona was able to hold off the storm and convert at the free throw line to win by a comfortable margin. Mana Hopkins, Jazzmin Awa-Williams and Liana Hanato-Smith was very steady hitting their free throws down the end . It was Konawaena's second Title in four years. Konawaena took the Title in 2004 and lost a close double overtime to Punahou in 2005. In that game, late free throws not converted opened the door for Punahou to tie the game and go on to win in overtime. However, this night belonged to the Wildcats and they were not going to be denied the championship as they hit their free throws at the conclusion of the game. Punahou however played a swarming physical type defense that caused many Konawaena turnovers and made the last minute of the game seem like an eternity. Konawaena never used a time out or made a substitution until the fourth quarter. Lianna Hanato-Smith rumored to be going to the UHH Vulcans hit four big treys as she finished with 14 points. Jazzy Awa-Williams had 15 points and was the senior leader for the BIIF Champions. Awa-Williams finishes her highly successful career as one of the few State Players who have played and started in four straight HHSAA Division I Tournaments. When the game was on the line she took charge and rallied her team mates and finished with 15 points. Mana Hopkins finished with a game high 26 points as she was aggressive attacking the basket and had some assists from Awa-Williams. Janelle Nomura who caused havok for the Honokaa defense the previous night was able to play aggressive and score nine points. Dara Tompkinson scored 10 points and inside laborer Chelsea Deptula had eight. However Kona's defense matched what Punahou threw at them.
The Kona victory capped off one of the most successful seasons by an outer island team. Kona finished the season undefeated.

Konawaena Takes Down Iolani To Reach Final

By HawaiiSportsPage.com
May 17, 2006: Konawaena Wildcats had to come from behind a hustling Iolani team to reach the finals of the Hawaiian Airlines HHSAA Girls Division I Championships at Stan Sheriff Arena. When it was all said and done the Wildcats won 51 -41. Behind for three quarters the Wildcats kicked it in fourth gear in the fourth to score 20 points and win the game. Jazzmin Awa-Williams scored a team high 27 points leading the Wildcat attack. Awa-Williams shot 78% from the free throw line making 14 out of 18 as she kept attacking inside and going to the line. Iolani’s Jamie Smith had a game high 28 points along with her 13 big rebounds. Kona’s strategy was to go inside to Hopkins and Williams on numerous occasions, unlike the previous night. Kona only attempted eight three pointers. Iolani tried to use their pressure defense to play an up-tempo transition game trying to wear down Kona who have only seven players rostered. The strategy worked for three quarters as they forced Kona’s man defense to stop their aggressive drives to the basket getting Kona in foul trouble. Jazzmin Awa-Williams picked up here fourth personal foul in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter but was able to play smart and avoid the fifth foul. Awa-Williams took control of the offense driving and cutting to the basket and making Iolani commit to fouls. Mana Hopkins picked up some scoring in the fourth quarter to help Awa-Williams she finished with eight points and eight rebounds. Alana Matayoshi kept pressure on Kona’s defense as she drove past her defender and scored six points. Liana Hanato-Smith dished out three assists and had six points.  Kona will face Punahou in the final which defeated Honokaa 47-41. The two teams faced each other in 2005 in which Punahou won in an overtime thriller.

Kona Shoots Down Falcons
HawaiiSportsPage.com
May 16, 2007: Kona used hot first half shooting last night in the Hawaiian Airlines HHSAA Division I Quarterfinal game to defeat Kalani 58-46. Kona opened their three point game as they made 12 points off of treys by Liana Hanato-Smith and Kara Hanato-Smith. Kona shot 52% in the first half to jump to a 33-19 halftime lead. Kona also had it going on the inside with Mana Hopkins and Jazzy Awa- Williams. Hopkins finished with 14 points and dominated the glass with 18 huge rebounds, Jazzmin Awa-Williams led all scorers with 19 points and seven rebounds. Kalani’s Courtney Gaddis was held virtually scoreless in the first half but she was able to finish strong with eight points, Megan Kamehiro last years DII MVP knocked in 15 points. The usually strong shooting Kalani team did not shoot particularly well as Kona’s press and aggressive man defense held the falcons to only five field goals in the entire first half. Kalani ended shooting 27% from the field while Konawaena ended up shooting close to a healthy 40%. Kalani attempted 23 treys making 8 out of those attempts for 24 Kalani points. By HawaiiSportsPage.com

However, the Warriors were able to score nine in the third behind Sierra Gacayan's five points going into the fourth 41-17. The Warriors could taste victory as they cruised in the fourth quarter trading baskets with Sacred Hearts. Sacred had their best offensive spurt in the fourth scoring 13 points but they could not stop Kamehameha's offensive attack as they gave up sixteen to the Warriors in the fourth. The Keisha Show Has An Encore

By HawaiiSportsPage.com
May 18, 2007: Keisha Kanekoa did it again hitting a last bucket with seconds remaining to pull Honokaa past Iolani 49-48 in the Hawaiian Airline HHSAA Girls Division I third place game. Kanekoa finished the night scoring more than half of her team's total points with 26. The script could not have been written better for Kanekoa's last game in a Honokaa uniform. She literally supplied all the scoring for the Dragons in the HHSAA tournament. Her roll up the sleeves and jump in the trench became a spectacle to watch as many fans may have witnessed one of Hawaii's best ever prep player tournament performance. Kanekoa would not give up and her relentless desire not to lose made her special. Honokaa finished in third place. Honokaa trailed at the half 26-24. Iolani would go on to build a slim six-point lead going into the fourth quarter. That is when Keisha Kanekoa turned it on scoring 13 points, giving two assists, blocking one shot and hustling for two rebounds. Jessica Lorenzo hit a big trey and Kaylene Kanekoa; Keisha's younger sister had some critical fourth quarter rebounds. Jaime Smith, Iolani's answer to Kanekoa battled hard to the end and had a huge night grabbing 10 rebounds, scoring 18 points and dishing out five assists. Sarah Turgeon and Alana Matayoshi scored 12 and 8 and fought to the end in this great competition. Iolani ranked in the top five in most Hawaii state polls through out the year, including several weeks as number one proved they had an exciting team with great players. Jessica Lorenzo who ends her Honokaa career is rumored to be going to a local DII school finished with six points and four assists including a huge trey in the fourth quarter. Kaylene Kanekoa contributed seven points.

Honokaa Slides By Moanalua
By HawaiiSportsPage.Com
May 15, 2007: Honokaa struggled offensively in the first half of the Hawaiian Airlines HHSAA Division I first round game against Moanalua. In a defensive low scoring game Honokaa found a way to get it done as they still prevailed 33-25. Honokaa's Keisha Kanekoa seemed to play tight most of the game and failed to score in the first half of the game. Honokaa hit six out of 24 field goal attempts in the first half for a low 25%. However, Honokaa's defense was able to shut down Moanalua to only seven first half points and allowing only three field goals for a measly 18%. Honokaa held on to a slim lead of 6 to 4 at the first quarter. Honokaa went into the intermission ahead 15-7. The game was a little sloppy for both teams as there were 46 turnovers committed. However Honokaa remained in control most of the night as Moanalua never got closer than seven points to Honokaa. Honokaa controlled the battle of the boards out rebounding their opponents 31 to 23 and allowing only three-second offensive shot attempts. Jessica Lorenzo finished with eight points while Jamaika Lorenzo and Keisha Kanekoa added six a piece. For Moanalua Jamie-Leigh Ronolo had a game high 13 points, while sister Britni Ronolo had eight. BIIF Referee Jose Irizary's baritone voice could be heard throughout the Stan Sheriff Center as he added some game ambiance to the arena and crowd of 800 fans.

Punahou Outlasts Honokaa

By HawaiiSportsPage.com
May 18, 2007: Punahou used pressure offensively and defensively to beat a resilient Honokaa team 47-41. Keisha Kanekoa out did her outstanding 31 point performance the night before by scoring 32. However, Punahou used a pressure man and full court zone defenses to wear down Honokaa. Keisha Kanekoa literally carried the Dragons on her back the whole night supplying the offense and rebounds. Punahou used an attacking dribbling offense to put Honokaa’s help defense in foul trouble the whole night. Punahou’s Janelle Nomura scored 18 points, many of those points she got by beating the Honokaa defenders to their spots then going to the free throw line. Chelsea Deptula provided some inside scoring for Punahou as she finished with 16 points. Honokaa closed out the second quarter on a 5-0 run to close within two points, 19-17 and momentum going into the half. However Punahou’s attacking style on defense created some passing turnovers in the third quarter and made Honokaa Keisha Kanekoa work for her shots. Punahou had two and three defenders on Kanekoa each time she drove to the basket. Honokaa got within two points 34-36 with five minutes to go in the game. Punahou then went up by four and began to play cat and mouse as they spread the floor and made Honokaa chase Punahou’s Nomura. Honokaa used a foul strategy to get the ball back but missed the rebounds on some Punahou missed free throws that stifled the Dragons comeback. Punahou will play Konawaena for the HHSAA Championship tonight in a 2005 rematch. Konawaena won it all in 2004 and lost a heartbreaker to Punahou in 2005 in overtime.

Honokaa Upsets Roosevelt

By HawaiiSportsPage.com
May 16, 2007: Honokaa defeated the number one overall seed in the Hawaiian Airlines HHSAA Girls Division I Basketball Tournament. When it was over Honokaa had prevailed 53-45 at the Stan Sheriff Center on Oahu. Jamaika Lorenzo and Jessika Lorenzo added seven points each for Honokaa. All State Roosevelt player Iwalani Rodrigues finished with 17 points while Tasia Kamakawiwoole had a solid game adding 11.Honokaa and Roosevelt played even the first quarter that ended 12-11 in favor of Honokaa. The third quarter saw some tightening of the Roosevelt defense as Honokaa turned the ball over six times and missed some jump shots scoring only five points.  HPA Captures BIIF DII Title
By HawaiiSportsPage.com
May 5, 2007: HPA's Head Basketball Coach Craig Kimura had a plan for the season and the planned worked. HPA used their inside size and perimeter quickness to stymie BIIF foes.  HPA may not have the Marquee offensive players that some of the DI powerhouses or DII Kamehameha, but they made the most of what they had. HPA had no surprises in what they were going to do. They were going to play zone defense and make you beat them by shooting outside shots. Also they weren't going to do anything fancy on offense but try to get it inside to their post players and drive open lanes or take midrange jumpers and be patient. Simple but very effective as Kamehameha found out.

HPA over achieved all season, not having the offensive talent and skills as other top programs, they did what they were doing all season controlling the ball. In preseason they showed glimpses of what could be, they pushed DI powerhouses Hilo and Waiakea nearly defeating both of them. On this Championship night HPA allowed only 14 points total in the second and third quarters. Kamehameha had their opportunities to score more but the basketball was not cooperating. The key for the Kamakani's Offense was to break Kamehameha's 1-2-2 half court zone trap. They were able to successfully break the Warriors press and to keep their offense in control mode. Many HPA players also are rostered on the soccer and volleyball teams and are just athletes similar to Kamehameha.

Cecily Kimura knocked down the two most important free throws of her BIIF career that sealed the victory for HPA as she made the score 40-37 with seconds remaining. Taylor Wang also hit a big free throw prior to the minute mark. Kanisha Bello and Tabitha Eseroma finished each with game highs of 10 points for the Warriors. Both teams will now travel to Oahu for the HHSAA State Championships.

Honokaa & Kona Stomps Opponents To Qualify For States
ByHawaiiSportsPage.com
May 4, 2007: Honokaa avenged a season ending 18 point loss to Hilo by blowing past the Vikings 60-31 in the BIIF Semifinals. With the possibility of this game being Keisha Kanekoa's  last in a Honokaa uniform, it wasn't to be. Kanekoa displayed why she may be one of the best to ever have played in the BIIF. Fans will have another chance to watch her tonight in the BIIF Championships and the HHSAA State Tournament. Her 35 points propelled a hungry Honokaa team that seemed destined to return to the states. Honokaa Head Coach Shawna Lau Kong, seemed to have learned from the earlier loss and made some major adjustments to contain Hilo's Vicky Tagalicod and Kaimaile Allen. Their defense suffocated Hilo's offense throughout the night. Hilo made many turnovers which was their achilles heel throughout the season. Honokaa's Senior Jessika Lorenzo also finished the game with 14 points. Kaimaile Allen of Hilo closed out her BIIF career as Hilo was eliminated.

Konawaena also advanced with a 36 point victory over a shorthanded Waiakea team. Konawaena's starting 5 could be the best 5 in the State. The Wildcats displayed why they may be a legitimate title contender in this years HHSAA. Konawaena went into the locker room at half with a 12 point lead. What ever Bobbie Awa said in that locker room must have worked because Konawaena came out fired up as they went on a tear to take a 59-28 lead after 3 quarters. Konawaena had big games from Mana Hopkins and Jazzy Awa-Williams as they combined for 46 points, finishing with 23 points each. Camie Yamashita had 10 points for the Warriors.

Konawaena Reclaims BIIF DI Title
By HawaiiSportsPage.com
May 5, 2007: Konawaena ended Honokaa's one year reign as BIIF champions by defeating the Dragons 56-33. Konawaena's defense turned it up a notch and limited Honokaa to only 14 points in the second half. Similar to the previous night, Kona came out of the half time locker room with tenacity. They seized control of the game in the third quarter scoring 17 points and limiting Honokaa to only nine. At the end of three quarters the Kona lead was 14. But it was the defense that bottled up Honokaa in the fourth quarter that sealed Honokaa's fate. The Dragons were able to only muster 5 points in the fourth, mainly because of Kona's defense.

Hilo Girls Stifle Honokaa To End The Regular Season

By Hawaii Sports Page
April 28, 2007: With a large crowd at UHH gym on Saturday the Viking Girls gave Honoka a 56-38 loss. The win for the Vikings gave Hilo a second place tie with Honokaa behind league leading Konawaena. Hilo is being seeded two in the BIIF tournament because of the head to head win over Honokaa.

The Vikings used a 1-3-1 zone to keep Honokaa's Keisha Kanekoa from penetrating into the paint, somewhat effective it forced Honokaa to take outside shots. However, Honokaa had their chances to score numerous times but missed many golden opportunities on inside baskets. Kanekoa hit many apparent assists into the post players who failed to finish early in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. Honokaa played toe to toe with Hilo in the first two quarters. The first quarter ended knotted up at 11. The second quarter Hilo outscored Honokaa 13-9 to take a 24 to 20 lead at intermission. Hilo used an effective high post stack formation which allowed Sophmore Vicky Tagalicod to create and go to the basket or dish to Hilo's best finishers. Hilo's Kaimale Allen was a recepient of many golden dishes by Tagalicod who found Allen when the defense collapsed on Tagalicod. Senior Kaimale Allen finished with 22 points. Honokaa stayed in their trademark man defense throughout the night.

Vicky Tagalicod a Star Bulletin Fab 15 State Player her freshman year had a dominating performance scoring 27 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. Senior Keisha Kanekoa also a Fab 15 State Player finished with 17. However, the best second half perfomance which was overshadowed by Tagalicod came from April Cano of Honokaa who finished with a team high 18 points. Cano hit a layup off a steal and acrobatic finish, hit three treys and a mid range jump shot. Honokaa seemed to seize momentum from Cano but Hilo kept matching Honokaa's scoring.

In the fourth quarter Hilo used a four corner spread delay which extended Honokaa's man defense allowing Tagalicod to penetrate and dish to a wide open Kamaile Allen cutting to the basket numerous times. Hilo's Christine Laeda played another good game on defense as she kept Keisha Kanekoa in check. The BIIF tournament is up next for both teams and with the seedings being finalized these two teams may see a rematch.
